Want to know our new favorite date night spot?
Pastel Rooftop Restaurant in Bangkok!
I’d been invited to check out Pastel the next time I was in Bangkok, so last month when I was there, I was so excited to finally go!
Location
Pastel rooftop restaurant is in Bangkok inside Aira Hotel on the 22nd floor, which made it felt like we were part of a secret club as we went into the lobby, where after double checking at the hotel front desk that we were at the right place, they led us to a corner elevator that we took to the 22nd floor to Pastel.
Vibe:
When the elevator doors opened we stepped into another world as we entered into Pastel and what would soon become our new favorite rooftop restaurant in Bangkok.
Right in front of us was a beautiful silver Vespa, and behind it on the wall a lit up sign that said “All I Need Is Pastel”. It felt like we’d ridden our scooter there, parked it and now got to enter a new city that everyone had been talking about.
From the moment we arrived, I felt that we’d been welcomed into an intimate dinner party of an inviting, and gifted host whose goal is to make sure everyone feel so welcome that they leave feeling like they wish they never had to leave.
To go with the dinner party feel, each weekend at Pastel there is a unique fun theme.
The night we were there was Amazonia night, so there were leopard printed blankets gracefully laid on the chairs, a huge tribal mask in the middle of the restaurant, animal masks that you could have fun trying on at the tables, and even vines strung around the booths.
We arrived at 7:30pm during the festive dinner vibe. We gazed from the rooftop at the darkening Bangkok skyline with the city lights lit up like brilliant stars.
Everyone there was relaxed since work had been over for a few hours, and now it was time to chill and have fun.
A DJ in a booth way up high was playing house beats that Thai Hubby adores, and there was even a saxophonist who was walking around the restaurant playing and making us all smile and dance.
Food:
Appetizers:
The food at Pastel blew our minds, such attention to detail in taste and presentation.
My favorite appetizer was the truffle toast. With my first bite my heart skipped a beat like when I’d first laid eyes on Thai Hubby because it was so packed with intense, umami flavors, which made me say, “Oh my goodness! Mmmm…this is amazzzzinnng!”
But also the dry aged pork neck with shaved parmesan, pistachio, and micro greens?!
Eating the unique combo of flavors and textures was like when you look at a beautiful artwork and you think you’ve seen it all at first glance but as you look more, more and more details pop up and you get more and more intrigued.
Drinks
The creativity in presentation even shows up in the drinks.
We got the Agrabah Iced Tea. The server brought over what looked like Aladdin’s magical lamp, and poured what seemed liked a potion into a golden cup before presenting it to us. I felt so spoiled!
Mains:
Then they brought over on a rolling cart what looked like a platter with a mountain of coarse salt, which they lit it on fire and I gasped with delight!
So what was in the salt and fire??
Whole sea bass cooked in salt crust and flambeed with pastis, and then beautifully and skillfully skinned and cut table side by Paul, Pastel’s general manger.
Paul was so gifted at all the things a good host needs: attentive to not just us but the needs of everyone in the whole restaurant and so seamlessly serving everyone, and making sure everyone felt seen.
Hosting goals for sure! I just wanted to hang out more to learn from him!
But back to that sea bass! The Fire! The buttery silky sauce that was drizzled on top like gentle rain after a thunderstorm.
The bass was so tender, creamy and flaky with hints of springtime from the rosemary.
The salty, crispy skin, and charred lemon all brought a depth of flavor to the whole dish.
More please!
Our next entree was beef tenderloin with truffle sauce, and wow!
When Thai Hubby saw the dark truffle sauce he thought from the looks of it that it would taste like barbecue sauce, and wasn’t too excited, so his eyes lit up with delight after he tasted it.
You already know I have a mad crush on anything with truffles in it, and that dish made me fall in love even more, and want to combine truffles with Thai food somehow!
Ideas anyone??
Dessert
We ordered Pastel Chocolate Mousse which had Vairhana chocolate mousse, candied hazelnuts and praline ice cream and even sparkling gold foil sprinkled on top.
It was like eating grown up Nutella. That Hubby is not a dessert person but adored it, and I am a dessert person and was in heaven.
We also got strawberry panna cotta, which was vanilla panna cotta, which tasted like a delicate floating cloud, that was topped with strawberry meringue, aka adorable little chocolate chip sized dollops of meringue, and citrusy refreshing lemon gel glazed on top.
I was such a happy, full, delighted girl who felt like Cinderella and didn’t want the clock to ever strike midnight so the magical spell could last forever!
So if you are looking for the best rooftop restaurant in Bangkok? Pastel is our fav!
