Dom and Rocco were making a tower of wet sand as tall as Rocco, and I had been laying out next to them, smiling at my handsome, tan Thai boys as the gentle emerald waters of Ao Nang in Krabi, Thailand lapped on the shore behind us.
But then I was awoken out of my reverie when I saw a European couple meandering down the beach with clear plastic cups with pink straws, sipping what looked like a vibrant yellow mango smoothie.
My Baby Girl seemed to see it to because she kicked my rib, reminding me I needed to stay more hydrated, and what better way than by sipping a Thai Mango Smoothie while laying out on the beach in Thailand?
So I told my boys I was going on a search for a smoothie and I would be back soon. They barely heard me and waved me on while they went back into their sand creating world.
I raced across the hot like coals, fine, white sand, longing for my flip-flops I had left in our hotel room when we had walked from our room to the beach. But I didn’t have to run far before I found the smoothie oasis up on the side of the beach near the road.
I told the smiling server in Thai that I wanted a mango smoothie. She gave me an even bigger grin, probably wondering how this foreign girl knew Thai, even though my accent was way off.
She quickly dumped the freshly sliced, ripe, yellow mango into the blender, added some simple syrup, ice, and that was it. The blender loudly whizzed the Thai mango into cold sippable refreshment before my eyes. Then she smoothly poured it into a clear cup, plopped in the pink straw, and I gave her 4o baht, a little over a dollar.
I thanked her and skipped merrily away taking tiny sips, hoping that my so refreshing smoothie might last forever. Once I got back to my boys, the Thai mango smoothie woke them out of their sand world and they all took sips, marveling at how delicious it was and cheap compared to what it would cost at a touristy beach in the States.
The memory of all of us sipping that mango smoothie on the beach is one of my favorite ones from our trip. And even though I can’t quite recreate the whole memory in Austin, I can make one to take to our lovely apartment pool and dream of those lazy days of sipping mango on the beach!
