A Thai Foodie Love Story-Part 3

Happy Valentine’s Day dear friends! Aww, this is the final part of our Thai-Foodie Love Story. Please check out Part 1 and Part 2, and for those who just want a new Thai recipe, don’t worry, we have one coming up soon! 

After sleepless nights, long conversations with friends and family, and prayers, my risk-taking nature took over. I chose to make the scariest leap I ever had in my life, I would stay in Thailand another year, and see if we “worked out.”

As I leaped through the air, in August Dominic came back to Waxhaw to visit America during my vacation and meet my family.

While we walked along the shores of my favorite childhood beach in the Outer Banks where I used to pick up shells, and imagine stories, Dominic said to me, “Will you marry me?”

I said, “Yes!”

Then on January 6, 2009, I stood on my wedding day, alone, looking out at the sparkling fairy tale palace before me. My parents couldn’t make the wedding because of the bad economy, and neither could my American friends.

I was scared out of my mind at the unknowns before me–would Dominic get a green card in time for us to move to America in August, would we end up divorced like his parents, how was I going to begin marriage without my family next to me?

But a quote from C.S. Lewis in The Four Loves quieted me. He writes how to love at all is to be vulnerable. If we love anything our hearts will be wrung and possibly broken. But if we try to protect our heart from love, it will change. It will not be broken, but become unbreakable, and impenetrable.

I stood in my mermaid-style wedding gown, with a smile on my face, my hand in my Thai husband’s strong grip, and said I do to the chance of a broken heart.

But as the words slipped out, and I let go of my heart’s defensive armor, I also said I do to the chance of freeing myself from my fear.

And so far it’s been worth every risk.

    I came to your site for recipes and I got a love story to go with it. That was a very sweet story. I too get the, Your husbands Thai reactions. I am Filipino and black so, I laugh when some people react that way. As if they only know the food and not the people. I hope to one day go to Thailand and show my kids that part of them. Wish you and your family all the best! I must continue looking through your site.
